A mining village in the Postmasburg district. Sishen is the site of the earth's largest known iron-ore deposits. Though manganese had been mined in the vicinity since 1929, it neither was nor until 1940 that the rich seams of hematite, containing 66% iron, was discovered. A specialty-constructed 861km railway, opened in 1976, carries iron ore from the area to Saldanha Bay for export.
