The town of Mokopane was named after Makapan, the nineteenth-century chief of the Ndebele community living in the area at the time. The town extends over an area of ± 1683 km?, including 3 towns, 117 villages and 9 traditional leaders. The typically bushveld area has many Acacia trees and aloes which are at their best in June and July. Well worth a visit are the Makapans Caves, now a world heritage site, the Game Breeding Centre of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, a breeding station for protected species and the Percy Fife Reserve.
