Nababeep, located northwest of Springbok, was first mined for copper in the 1850's by the Cape Copper Company. The towns name means 'the water behind the little hill', because of the spring beside which it was established. The mine was closed in 1919 due to a decline in the copper price, but was reopened in 1937. It belongs to the Okiep Copper Company and is the largest of the copper mines working in the Namaqualand.
