Lephalale lies in the heart of the Waterberg region on the Mokolo River, with the Tropic of Capricorn running through it. The malaria-free area, with its numerous nature reserves, game farms and lodges is about a three-hour drive from Gauteng. Established in 1960, Lephalale is one of the youngest towns in the country. The original name of Ellisras was a combination of the names of two pioneering families, Ellis and Erasmus, who settled on the farm Waterkloof in the 1930s, while the new name was granted to the town in 2002.
