The settlement began with the founding of a Dutch Reformed Church congregation in 1743 and the town was officially proclaimed in 1829. Originally called Zwartlandskerk, later renamed Malmesbury by Sir Lowry Cole, in honour of his father in law, Sir James Harris, First Earl of Malmesbury. The town is known as the Heart of the Swartland.
