Cutting a purple river across pink sky, the Amatola Mountains - stretching from Stutterheim in the east to Adelaide in the west - whisk nature lovers straight into the soul of Eastern Cape.

With the thick essence of eucalyptus, the sound of the wind wailing through the treetops and the breathless surprise of endless panorama appearing through the forests, the Amatola Mountain Escape welcomes you. Chilly streams and caramel-coloured puddles reflect the surrounding beauty, enchanting hikers with its heavenly sky cinema.

A plethora of wildlife in the area provides the ideal opportunity for game viewing, while the more adventurous might enjoy some adrenaline-inducing abseiling, rock climbing, or kayaking. Fly-fishing, 4x4 trails, camping and visits to cultural villages are just some of the other activities available to visitors.

The Amatola route is alive with history - from colonial forts and battlefields to the myths and legends of the Xhosa. History is written in caves and on rock overhangs, painted through the centuries by the peace-loving San. Rock paintings are increasingly cherished as heritage sites, and tourists are invited to take in the wonderful tales of legend and everyday that makes up this part of the province's history.
